The traditional white bread French toast is packed with sugar, milk, refined carbohydrates and loaded with butter—a guilty pleasure, to be sure. This recipe is still delicious, but calls for whole grain bread (giving you complex carbohydrates) and egg whites to help keep cholesterol low. You can still use butter, but just a small amount—this way, you can enjoy the flavor without feeling bogged down afterwards. The kids love this healthy alternative and you will still feel like you are eating something decadent.
1. Mix eggs, orange juice, vanilla, and cinnamon together in a shallow dish.
2. Soak the piece of bread until it has absorbed most of the liquid. Heat a pan or griddle and add butter.
3. Put bread in pan, and pour remaining egg batter onto bread. Cook a few minutes, then flip.
4. Toast is done when both sides are golden. Top with fresh berries and pure maple syrup.
