    negroni

One story has it that this drink was invented by Count Camillo Negroni in 1920s Florence. He apparently asked a bartender to add some gin to his favorite drink, the Americano. He then ordered this concoction so many times that the bartender dubbed it the Negroni. You can use vodka in place of the gin, but the gin lends the drink more depth and aroma.

    Yield: Makes four 3-ounce drinks

    INGREDIENTS
    • Ice for serving
    • 4 ounces Campari
    • 4 ounces sweet vermouth
    • 4 ounces gin or vodka
    • 4 orange twists for garnish (see Notes)

    Directions

Fill the rocks glasses with ice.

Fill a pitcher with ice and add the Campari, sweet vermouth, and gin. Stir just to blend.

Strain into the rocks glasses. Twist an orange twist over each drink, then rub the skin side on the rim of the glass, drop the twist in, and serve.

ORANGE NEGRONI To make a less potent yet still delicious drink, prepare the Negroni using half the listed amount of each liquor. Strain into four highball glasses, top each glass with fresh orange juice, and serve.

    Notes

    GLASSWARE: Rocks glasses

TWISTS are 1- to 1½-inch-long oval or rectangular slivers of lemon, lime, orange, grapefruit, or other citrus rind. Twists are, in fact, twisted over a cocktail, releasing their essential oils into the drink. Thicker-skinned, evenly colored fresh, ripe fruits produce more of the fruit’s essential oils than thin-skinned ones yield.
